Host venue Nakhon Phanom gearing up for Mekong Tourism Forum 2018 from 25-29 June

Bangkok, 05 June 2018 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is looking forward to welcoming delegates to Thailand’s Northeastern or Isan province of Nakhon Phanom for the Mekong Tourism Forum 2018 (MTF 2018), scheduled for 25-29 June at Nakhon Phanom University.

With the theme of ‘Transforming Travel – Transforming Lives’, the MTF 2018 is held under the collaboration of the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office (MTCO), the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand (MoTS), and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The Forum is taking on a new approach in that conference sessions will be held together with local communities in their villages. This way the local people can become involved in this annual event and as a result, the discussions and exchange of ideas that take place will be enriched and the overall experience enhanced.

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said: “We are delighted to support this year’s MTF 2018, we want to help participants live the theme. As such the Forum’s eight thematic sessions will be conducted in eight ethnic communities, thus opening the way for valuable interaction between the MTF delegates and the people of Nakhon Phanom.”

The programme for the MTF 2018 comprises three key parts. There is a ‘Transforming Travel’ session on 27 June with discussions ranging from Buddhist tourism to responsible tourism, and the potential for transforming travel and people’s lives. On 28 June, there are mini keynote presentations from senior executives representing different travel sectors in the morning, followed by thematic sessions hosted by local communities in the afternoon.

In addition, there are two integrated side events including the Mekong Innovative Startups in Tourism Conference and the inaugural Mekong Mini Movie Festival.

The MTF 2018 will conclude with a post-tour on 29 June, featuring visits to Nakhon Phanom’s important Buddhist landmarks, Wat Phra That Phanom, and sightseeing of the province’s town center.

First-time Thainess: celebrating a rural Songkran

tat-songkran-2014Like any first-time tourist landing in Bangkok in April, I knew a little about the Songkran Festival.  I’d seen the pictures of a nationwide, free-for-all water battle, fought annually by wet warriors daubed in powder and armed with space-age water pistols and huge smiles.  It looked fun.

Desperate to take part, I checked into a hotel on Khao San Road, which I was told was the heart of the Songkran action. Soon I was in the world’s biggest water fight, dripping wet and enjoying a Bacchanalian battle with fun-loving locals. “This,” I said to myself “is Songkran!”  How wrong I was.

The following year I accepted an invitation from my neighbour Jeab, to celebrate the Thai New Year in her sleepy hometown of Phitsanulok. The trip was to show me a whole new side of Songkran – the real Songkran. Read more

THAI Smile Airways and Amazon Falls, the owner and operator of Cartoon Network Amazone, have formed a partnership which will see the waterpark featured exclusively on the aircraft livery.

The first Cartoon Network Amazone-branded aircraft is expected to take flight in April 2015. Passengers can expect to join Adventure Time’s Finn, Jake, Princess Bubblegum, Marceline and other beloved characters from the television network for a unique travel experience.

Captain Woranate Laprabang, Acting Chief Executive Officer of THAI Smile Airways said, “The collaboration between THAI Smile Airways and Cartoon Network Amazone Waterpark means a lot to the travel and tourism industry in Thailand. In an effort to raise the profile of the country and increase the number of international tourists to Thailand, THAI Smile Airways will decorate several aircrafts with the characters from Cartoon Network.”

Opened in October in Chon Buri, the attraction is the first Cartoon Network-themed waterpark in the world.
